Commit yourself!

CPE Bach, perhaps the most experimental and innovative of JS Bach’s composer sons, had a reputation for not only deeply feeling the emotions evoked by his music but also clearly, perhaps even exaggeratedly, showing what he was feeling as he performed. When asked why he did this he replied that one could not expect those listening to a piece of music to be moved emotionally if the person who was performing it was not only moved in a similar manner, but also made a point of physically expressing it.

For a new and/or innovative idea to be accepted people need to become convinced of its worth. This usually means that someone needs to take a lead and demonstrate his or her personal commitment to it. For example, when an Australian doctor discovered that some stomach ulcers were caused by microbes in the stomach rather than stress and a bad lifestyle none of his colleagues would believe him, that is until he infected himself with the microbes and then cured himself with antibiotics!

The next time you think of a new and innovative idea ask yourself:

  • How committed are you to your idea and how enthusiastic do you feel about it?
  • If you are highly committed to the idea and feel very enthusiastic about it, how can you make this clear to others?
  • What are you personally willing to say and do in support of your idea?
  • Do your words truly match your feelings or do you qualify and downplay your commitment and enthusiasm when talking about your idea?
