Creativity in the air: how music can help us all be more creative

Music is creativity in the air. It surrounds us for much of our lives, and we are even aware of it before we are born. At some very deep level within us we need the stimulation of its crashing energy and vitality and the calming reassurance of its dreamy slowness - its velvety, flowing emotion.

Music is almost telepathy. It grants us the gift of hearing and experiencing thoughts and emotions not easily expressed by words, either written or spoken. It is perhaps the best tool we have for gaining access to the inner workings of someone else’s mind.

Music mirrors our lives. It moves from one emotion to another; it has a beginning and an end; it moves quickly, then slowly; flows up and then down; has climaxes and anti – climaxes; it  works itself out into  various lines, pathways and harmonies as it goes along. Like humanity, the lives of which it mirrors, it strives to make sense of its existence and develop to their full extent its various potentials, thoughts, ideas and emotions. Also, just as we sometimes find in our own lives, it struggles to solve the problems set deep within itself.

Music helps us think. It creates stimulating worlds of sound that encourage us think creatively and deeply. Practising a musical instrument physically enhances the connections between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, so helping us to tap into our full thinking potential, to use our intuitive and logical faculties synergistically.

Music merits deep study. As music surrounds us so intimately, like a second aural skin, we need to take the time to notice the sensations it gives us and the insights and new perspectives it puts before us. This will help us develop what almost amounts to a sixth 'musical' sense that adds new layers of meaning to our everyday interactions with the world.

The following pages (that will be added to from time to time), will explore the nature of music and how it can help us become more creative in our lives and in how we deal with the situations and problems we face. They will describe the creative approaches and techniques inherent within music and show how they can  be applied within other, non- musical spheres of endeavour.
