Take the time to play things out After listening to one of his master class pupils play a Beethoven piano sonata Daniel Barenboim, the famous conductor and pianist, made a deceptively simple comment. He said that one should never rush when there is a clash – that it should be given the time and space to be played out. The pupils attending the master class were well-accomplished pianists who possessed an in depth knowledge of the music in front of them. In spite of this, however, Barenboim felt he needed to make the above observation. It was as if the pianists, for all their facility and expertise, were finding it difficult to fight a deeply ingrained need to quickly move away from ‘notes of discord’. Barenboim was obviously talking about musical dissonance and how to most elegantly resolve it during a musical performance, but the principle of staying with dissonance rather than quickly leaving it behind has resonance within other, non- – musical contexts. Most of us are tempted to hastily gloss over disagreements and conflicts, to minimise the dissonance we experience between others and ourselves. Sometimes we do this even when we know that it would be better to stick with the notes of discord and allow them the time and space they need for a satisfying and beneficial resolution. This happens because, like most humans, we possess an instinctive need to distance ourselves from any kind of discomfort, be this physical, mental or even merely auditory. The next time you are faced with a conflict or disagreement, a note of discord between others and yourself, see what happens when you stick with it. Be curious despite your instinctive foreboding and work at finding the most effective way to play things out to a mutually satisfying conclusion.
